Perhaps the Marshall-to-the-Jets talk was a bit premature. Seems no one asked the Broncos whether they’d actually part with him (or at least part with him for what other teams are offering). ESPN reports the Broncos are carefully tracking the Jets’ public comments for any potential tampering violations. From ESPN:
Broncos Monitor Jets for Possible Tampering
Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has consistently stated the team intends for Marshall, who wants either a new contract or a trade, to play for Denver this season. On Friday, Denver suspended Marshall through Sept. 5 for “detrimental” conduct.
The Broncos want Marshall to accept playing for them as the only outcome so that he will conform his behavior. The concern for the Broncos is those attempts could be undermined if the brooding Pro Bowl player becomes convinced a trade is possible.
Tampering in the NFL is like requiring players to attend “voluntary” practices in college football - everybody does it, but it’s technically against the rules. The bigger question is whether the Broncos actually intend to keep Marshall, or whether they’re merely trying to get him on best his best behavior to pump up his rapidly diminishing trade value.
