It may be time for everyone—the media, fans, fellow players, the Dallas Cowboys—to take a giant mulligan. Are we sure Tony Romo is that great of a quarterback? Let’s see:
Re-Thinking Tony Romo: NYG 27 Dal 24
Winning smile? (check.)
Great arm strength and athleticism? (check.)
Lots of attractive girlfriends? (check.)
An aw-shucks demeanor that suggests “he just loves playin football”? (check.)
Competent performances in big games? Nope.
Ever? Not really.
Earlier today, I spoke to friend of mine who’s a Giants fan, and of tonight’s game, he said, “The Cowboys should probably win, but I’m going with the Giants. With the stadium and Sunday night and all that, it’ll be a big game, and Romo can’t handle that I don’t think.”
And certainly, he’s been the Cowboys’ Achilles heal in this one. He just threw his third interception of the game, and to add insult to Romo’s increasingly injured reputation, Chris Collinsworth said of the pass, “it was almost like it was a punt to (Giants DB) Kenny Phillips.”
To make matters worse for Dallas, Eli Manning led a stirring drive after the turnover, and punctuated it with a touchdown pass to Steve Smith. The Giants have the lead now in what’s been a back-and-forth affair from the start. Tune in, because the final ten minutes of the 4th quarter figure to be exciting.
