USF’s Matt Grothe to Miss Rest of Season With Torn ACL

Two weeks ago, Bulls' QB Matt Grothe became the Big East career leader in total offense with 10,875 yards. Unfortunately for him and South Florida, that is where his Big East story ends.

Grothe tore his ACL in the second quarter of this past weekend’s 59-0 victory over Charleston Southern. The Bulls have a reputation for starting strong and fading during the season with Grothe. Now they’ll have a huge wall to climb if they hope reverse that trend.

“Obviously, I am disappointed because you never think this could happen to you,” said Grothe. “It’s a team game and I am still going to be very involved with my teammates and the coaches. I am going to do everything I can to help the Bulls continue to win.”

A USF without Grothe seems unheard of to most college football fans who only found out the program even existed two years ago. Grothe had been the starting quarterback for USF since 2006 and had started 41 consecutive games. Redshirt freshman B.J. Daniels is expected to start under center for the Bulls and he has no easy task. The 3-0 Bulls will be tested for the first time this season as they visit newly-frisky Florida State on Saturday.
