Robert Henson About to Become Fan Favorite in D.C.

Robert Henson goal post

However you feel about Redskins fans, they certainly have a right to feel disappointed by their team’s output on the field these first two weeks. After another offseason of having expectations stoked by outsize free agent spending and assurances that the offense would be much improved, the team has been largely underwhelming. Add to that the ever-present reality that going to FedEx Field is a considerable labor of love for even the most diehard ‘Skins fan, could you really blame fans for airing a little displeasure with what they hoped was a possible playoff team nearly squeaking by a Rams squad that was shut out in Week 1?
↵
↵Well, Redskins rookie linebacker Robert Henson trains a condemning finger at you booing hordes of raving simpletons. In a series of Twitter updates after the game, Henson made a point to chastise fans for extreme disloyalty, all the while casting them as underemployed idiots who have no real concept of the rigors of the game. Which is at least partially true, but it’s also going to get you in trouble every time.
↵
↵Let’s look at some of the highlights of what he wrote. For a more thorough examination, D.C. Sports Bog has condensed them nicely.
↵
↵

↵↵⇥All you fake half hearted Skins fan can .. I won’t go there but I dislike you very strongly, don’t come to Fed Ex to boo dim wits!! ↵↵That would be fairly damning if only there weren’t an unfortunate lack of a comma at the end.
↵↵⇥The question is who are you to say you know what’s best for the team and you work 9 to 5 at Mcdonalds ↵↵Yeah, sure, pal. Like any hourly McDonald’s employee can afford the Dan Snyder ticket plan without getting sued.
↵
↵Not the most tactful response, by any means. And the Redskins commentariat was quick to react. Former ‘Skins returner Brian Mitchell leapt to the defense of the fans during a postgame show, saying:
↵
↵↵⇥“Who the hell is Robert Henson? First of all, I’ll talk for the fans. Get on the field, Robert Henson. Make a play and make sure someone know who the hell you are. You can write on Twitter about me, but you know what, these fans pay your salary. They can boo you if they want to boo you, and when you don’t play great, and when you’re sitting at home watching the game, you damn sure can’t get mad at the fans. So c’mon, give me a break. He is picking a battle he shouldn’t pick. The NFL tried to save him from stupidity, from going after the fans. I advise him to shut his damn mouth and get on the football field....”
↵⇥
↵⇥“I don’t see his name on the stat sheet, so if I don’t see your name on the stat sheet, you are not allowed to say anything. If you’re not playing, if you’re not performing, you can’t take a shot at anybody. Ok? So Robert Henson, shut up. Don’t say anything else on Twitter.” ↵↵To his credit, Henson issued apologies about boasting that he made more money than your average ‘Skins fan. He also claimed that his ire was induced by fans who pelted him with objects as he left the field. Which may happen a few more times in the future if Henson doesn’t heed Mitchell’s advice.↵
