When does knee surgery save someone’s life? When that someone is suffering “acute compartment syndrome, pressure in a small area and impaired blood supply,” which is just the situation Washington State RB James Montgomery found himself in Sunday morning.
Knee Surgery Saves the Life of James Montgomery
↵↵Close friend Dwight Tardy, a senior running back, said team doctor Ed Tingstad told him Montgomery “probably could have died†if a Sunday morning operation had been delayed too long. A wait of one to two hours might have led to amputation, Tardy said Tingstad told him.
↵“He (Tingstad) was pretty rattled and shook up,†Tardy said. “He started crying.â€
↵Trainer Bill Drake confirmed the gravity of Montgomery’s injury, adding, “There’s a lot of good news right now. His leg is saved.â€
↵
Montgomery still has to wait 6-12 months before doctors will be able to determine if he can play football again, but at this point, after nearly losing his leg and then, his life, football seems rather trivial.
