It’s still unfathomable to me that nobody in the league saw fit to offer David Lee a longterm contract (Oklahoma City, perhaps?), but that’s a discussion for another time. ESPN’s Mark Stein and Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski are reporting that David Lee will re-sign with New York, with terms set at one year, for $8 million dollars.
And the Other Shoe Drops: Lee to Sign a One-Year Deal, for $8 Million
“We’re on the verge of getting this done,” Bartelstein said. “I believe David will sign the contract tomorrow.”
Of course, they’ve been on the verge all summer, although with training camp imminent, you would think both sides have the necessary incentive to speed this along. The Knicks, of course, retain maximum flexibility looking ahead to 2010, but will risk losing Lee as an unrestricted free agent next summer.
Depending on who you talk to, Lee is either the most overrated or underrated player in the NBA. Whatever your thoughts, though, his presence in New York next year will make the Knicks a much more credible basketball team, and it’ll give Lee another chance to prove to either the Knicks or another franchise that he’s worth big bucks and a longterm deal.
