Drew Brees’ Favorite Play: Go Deep

That headline is an extreme oversimplification of what Chris Brown of Smart Football says is one of Brees’ favorite plays: four verticals. Brown, as he is known to do, breaks down the play in brilliant detail for the NY Times Fifth Down blog.

↵The Saints have evolved the traditional four-vert play from two receivers to each side of the set to a trips formation, with one receiver wide left of Brees and three to his right. The results, as Brees’ numbers thus far would suggest (669 yards, nine TDs), are staggering. Essentially, Brees is guaranteed that either his TE will be wide open or, at worst, his slot receiver will be one-on-one with a safety.

↵As Brown says, either one usually results in chains moving or points being put on the board.
