Tiger Woods heads into the weekend with a lead in the Tour Championship, going for another historic major victory. With Tiger as the lone top seed in the FedEx Cup standings in the top ten on the leaderboard, he finds himself in perfect position to score the $10 million top prize. You know, because Tiger needs the money.
Tiger in Perfect Position for FedEx Cup
Still, if he is able to hold onto his lead over the weekend it mark a triumphant return for Tiger Woods, who worked hard to return from knee surgeries following last year’s US Open. It will take a monumental collapse from Tiger, and a win by Padraig Harrington or Sean O’Hair, to lose his grip on the FedEx Cup.
With just a one-shot lead, he’s nowhere near in the clear. But he could have made it much easier on himself if not for two uncharacteristic misses on consecutive short putts.
“The day as a whole was a good day,” Woods said. “I shot under par, and I got myself … in the lead.”
It couldn’t have been that bad, not when all the attention was on two holes where he made a birdie and a par.
“Obviously, I didn’t expect him to miss two in a row,” Harrington said after a 69. “I looked up at the stats on the board just before he hit it, and he’s No. 1 from that range. I don’t think he misses two in a row all year. That’s probably for sure he hasn’t missed two in a row on the year. So it was a surprise.”
