Larry King-esque Points on Week Four

Extremely scattered thoughts very late at night about the day in college football.

↵—Week four is gone, and the actual amount of knowledge you may claim to have about who is good and who isn’t got even less clear with this week’s action. Penn State looked awful in losing to Iowa, Miami’s renaissance died at Virginia Tech, Ole Miss got trashed by the Gamecocks, and Cal suffered complete embarrassment at the hands of Oregon. Outside of Alabama and Florida, spots 3-10 are all pure guesswork after a month.

↵

—Tim Tebow’s injury is a ticklish one for Florida for more than the obvious reasons. A severe concussion can’t possibly clear up in two weeks, but Tebow will play the LSU game if he can find anyone with the words “Doctor” in front of their name to say he’s fine. Chances are, we will be watching an All-American with a bruised brain play in two weeks, and that is a thought that should make anyone watching as queasy as Tebow looked coming off the field.

↵—in an unstable world, a nation turns its eyes to Cincinnati’s Tony Pike, the steadiest qb in the nation who had another 300 yard passing game in a 28-20 victory over Fresno.

↵

—Florida State hits a new low by losing to a Matt Grothe-less USF team, 17-7. the good news is that this result won’t bother FSU fans for long, because at this rate a new, lower low is right around the corner.

↵

—Miss State may have lost on a 4th and goal play, but they should be awarded points for lining up in the wishbone against LSU on the final goal-line series at the end of the game. It looked like 1972 all over again.

↵—The best collective unit playing in college football right now is Alabama’s defense: disciplined, suffocating, and menacing.

↵—Ruffin McNeill, Texas Tech’s defensive coordinator, sweats like a hostage on a ransom tape.
