With Oregon headed to face a team known to zig when expected to zag, Ken Woody of the Register-Guard files a fascinating piece on the psychology of trick plays.
The Psychology of Trick Plays
↵↵Why do football trick plays either work or not? Boise State, the Ducks’ first-game opponent, has a long history of razzle dazzle plays that have delighted fans and confounded opposing teams and coaches. Last year, the Broncos, facing a fourth-and-short yardage situation against Oregon in Autzen Stadium, had their quarterback fake taking a knee and then drop back to hit his tight end (who passed the Ducks’ safety who was running up to stop the quarterback) for a first down and touchdown. Final score: Boise State 37, Oregon 32.
