Carlos Pena Our for Season After Breaking Fingers

The Rays will be without a key piece of their lineup for the rest of the season after Carlos Pena broke his middle and index fingers Monday during a 4-1 loss in the first game of a double-header against the Yankees.

He was hit in the hand on a check swing and immediately left the game. X-rays revealed two broken fingers, which will end Pena’s season. He has an A.L.-leading 39 homers.

The Rays, who are seven games back in the Wild Card chase, have already called up Chris Richard to replace Pena.
