Playing the Pittsburgh Pirates cures all ills, including the offensive woes of the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs tied a major league record Tuesday night with eight hits in the first inning. It’s not the first time it’s happened; it’s not even the first time it’s happened to the Pirates at the hands of the Cubs:
Cubs Tie First-Inning Major League Hits Record, Have the Pirates to Thank
According to Elias Sports Bureau, eight successive hits to start a game has been done five other times, most recently Sept. 25, 1990, when the New York Yankees did so against Baltimore. On Sept. 27, 1981, the Oakland Athletics collected eight in a row against the White Sox, and on Aug. 26, 1975, the Pirates did so against Atlanta.
On Aug. 5, 1975, the Philadelphia Phillies hit eight straight against the Cubs, who turned the trick against the Pirates on April 21, 1973.
Now, if only the Cubs could string together eight consecutive games in which they don’t make their fans utterly insane, they’ll be getting somewhere. (In other words, can they play the Pirates eight more times?)
