Remember when Texas was just a football school? Those days have been over ever since Rick Barnes set foot in Austin, to be fair, but in case there was any doubt, it should now be eradicated.
Texas Is Atop The AP Rankings For First Time Ever
↵Why? As Burnt Orange Nation points out, with Kansas’ loss to Tennessee yesterday, Texas is the nation’s top team in the AP Poll for the first time in its history. There have been some great Texas teams in recent years, but none of them ever achieved that feat. T.J. Ford’s 2002/03 Final Four team never did that. Neither did the 2005/06 club, led by Daniel Gibson and LaMarcus Aldridge, or the 2006/07 club led by Kevin Durant and D.J. Augustin.
↵The scary part is that, if you believe Longhorn fans, the best is yet to come.
↵↵All that said and all of that already accomplished, this team is barely scratching the surface. Texas isn’t a good free throw shooting team, hasn’t shown enough consistent shooting from deep and risks being zoned to death in future games, employs a three-headed and flawed attack at point guard, is still gelling as team defensively, and relies heavily on untested freshman in big spots.
↵↵One thing’s for sure: the February 8 showdown with Kansas can’t come soon enough.
