Heat Bans Gambling, Fun On Flights

(deep breath)

↵

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

↵From the Miami Herald:

↵↵The Miami Heat has decided to fold when it comes to card games and gambling on team flights.

↵After initially declaring the move to ban gambling unnecessary, gambling was off limits on the Heat’s flight from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City.

↵The Heat switched gears and instituted the team policy in the wake of developments that led to the league’s indefinite suspension of Washington Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas.

↵↵

What’s the point of even having NBA players if they’re not going to gamble high stakes money on strange card games with rules that nobody understands? Are we banning rampant infidelity next? Cancelling All-Star Weekend?

↵

When we imagine NBA teams on cross-country flights, we think of high stakes card games, mile high trysts with flight attendants, and all sorts of other behavior that’s off-limits to regular, boring people. We can take solace that despite their outlandish salaries and fame, at least they find creative ways to squander their gifts.

↵Now, Miami becomes the second team to ban gambling in less than a week, as teams scramble to save players from themselves.

↵

Make no mistake: at least half of what makes the NBA so much to cover is the culture. It’s chaos, sure, but damnit if it’s not great entertainment. Remember when Jerry Stackhouse punched Christian Laettner in the face? Gambling. When Charles Oakley stormed into the L.A. Clippers’ shootaround and threw a basketball at Tyrone Hill’s head? $108,000 gambling debt.

↵Now, suddenly, we’re just going to play games? Fine. Maybe these teams are right, but you have to admit: it’s so much more fun to be wrong.
