Devils 1, Rangers 0: Elias Wins With Shootout Winner
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Patrik Elias scored the only goal of the game, a successful wrister in the fourth shootout round, as the New Jersey Devils edged the New York Rangers, 1-0, in an Atlantic Division battle at Madison Square Garden which featured 96 total shots on goal.
Both goaltenders were phenomenal and earned an official shutout. New Jersey's Marty Brodeur extended his own NHL all-time record with the 107th shutout of his storied career and finished with 51 saves, while Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 45 shots for his 22nd career shutout.
After three full periods, an overtime session, and the three scheduled regulation shootout rounds, there were still no goals scored. Finally, in the fourth round of the shootout after Brodeur stopped Brandon Dubinsky, Elias fired home a wrister from between the circles and the Devils celebrated the win.
