Thrashers Impeach Senators, 6-1

More reaction at our Thrashers blog, Bird Watchers Anonymous, and our Senators blog, Silver Seven.

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Ilya Kovalchuk finished with a goal and two assists, and the Thrashers responded from a seven-goal loss with a 6-1 rout of the injury-riddled Ottawa Senators at Philips Arena.

Bryan Little and Todd White each finished with a goal and an assist for the Thrashers, who had lost 10 of their last 11, including an 8-1 loss to division rival Washington their last time out.

Eric Boulton, Tobias Enstrom and Pavel Kubina also scored, and Ondrej Pavelec made 30 saves and added an assist in the win.

“The things we’ve been working on finally came to fruition,” said Thrashers head coach John Anderson. “What it does, too, for us as a coaching staff is it helps us teach because the things that they were doing were things we were asking them to do. When you get a few bounces here and there, that’s what creates confidence.”

Peter Regin had the lone goal for the Senators, who have lost five straight as they continue to miss Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek with injuries. Pascal Leclaire allowed three goals on 14 shots in the first period, and Brian Elliott stopped only 11-of-14 shots in the last two frames.

SB Nation’s Silver Seven obviously wasn’t happy about the loss.

Here's the game in a nutshell: The Ottawa Senators were in tough anyway. The Atlanta Thrashers scored early to set Ottawa back. The Senators did nothing on a five-minute powerplay, but managed to tie the game mid-way through the first. The Atlanta scored a couple, at least one of which was suspect, and chased Pascal Leclaire. When Brian Elliott came in for the second, he did no better, and the Senators ended up on the wrong side of a 6-1 score. So we continue to hope things will change when this team gets healthy again.
