New Tennessee coach Derek Dooley said several things during his late night introduction Friday to distinguish himself from the not-so-dearly departed Lane Kiffin — but almost as distinct as what he said might have been how he said it.

↵Any Southerner knows that there’s no such thing as a “Southern accent.” There’s an Alabama accent and a Georgia accent and a South Carolina accent and even different accents in different parts of the same state. But having lived in the South all my life, I still can’t quite place Dooley’s very pronounced twang.
↵There’s some country Georgian in there, no doubt. A dash of Louisiana, maybe. At times, he sounds like a generic old-school country music star. It’s a little bit of everything and sort of its own thing at the same time.

Whatever it was, it sure wasn’t the bland, faintly Midwestern flavor in that previous guy’s voice. No, Mr. Dooley is SEC people.
