When predicting the winner of the grand slam tournament from Down Under, American fireball John McEnroe didn’t choose 15-time grand slam champ Roger Federer or even the Adelaide, Australia-native Lleyton Hewitt. Rather, he went with the English-lad who was crushed in the semi-finals of his homeland’s tournament.
The American Who Picked The Brit, McEnroe Favors Murray
Step aside Tim Henman. Andy Murray, who is Britain’s No.1 player, only has three of the top four players in the world between him and the kissing of his first Aussie cup.
But that seems to be tennis fuzz under the net to McEnroe:
"I think it is his (Murray's) time," McEnroe said.
"Each time he doesn't (win a major), the pressure sort of builds, but hardcourts are his favourite surface. He laid an egg in the (2009 US) Open when he lost to (Marin) Cilic; it was not a good effort. Cilic played well, but it was really surprising. But to me, (the Australian Open) is there for the taking because there are questions about some of the other guys."
Those top three guys in question are Rafael Nadal, Juan Martin Del Petro and the grand-slam king -- Federer that is -- himself.
And if the tennis thing doesn't work out for Murray, he might have a career in soccer:
