At noon, Saturday’s bowl action kicks off with the International Bowl in Toronto, where Northern Illinois and South Florida square off. Sure, it’s a rather small-time affair when compared to the bowls on New Year’s Day, but there are two reasons why the International Bowl stands out.
The International Bowl Has Two Things Going For It
↵Firstly, this is the only bowl to be played outside the United States. Sure, it’s “international” only in the technical sense, as Toronto is a morning jog away from Detroit, but the bowl name follows the letter of the law. And secondly, it’s one of only three bowls in 2009 to not carry an advertisement in its bowl game (along with the Texas Bowl and the New Mexico bowl). It might not be the most high-octane bowl of the year, but at least it isn’t trying to sell you insurance, cologne, or an oil change.
