In Progress: No. 6 Michigan State In Battle With Minnesota
Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Reigning Big Ten Player of the Year Kalin Lucas scored 22 points and dished out five assists, and sixth-ranked Michigan State recovered from a 13-point deficit and made a last-second defensive stand to beat Minnesota, 65-64, and remain unbeaten in conference play.
Raymar Morgan battled foul trouble and was perfect from the field and the line, hitting 5-of-5 shots and 3-of-3 free throws in a 14-point effort for the Spartans (17-3, 7-0 Big Ten), who are 7-0 in the conference for the first time since 1977-78, when Magic Johnson was leading the team. Chris Allen hit four shots from beyond the arc for 12 points in the win.
Devoe Joseph and Lawrence Westbrook both scored 16 points to lead Minnesota (12-7, 3-4), which lost its third straight and its first at home in 11 games this season. Ralph Sampson III provided eight points and nine rebounds in the loss for the Golden Gophers, who led for nearly 37 minutes of the contest.
Michigan State has now beaten Minnesota eight straight times, including a 60-53 win on January 16. The Spartans were able to shoot 11-for-24 from three- point range to help overcome a 40 percent shooting effort. The Gophers shot 49.1 percent from the field in the tough loss.
