In Progress: No. 9 Pittsburgh Battling Seton Hall In Newark
Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Herb Pope had 19 points and nine rebounds as Seton Hall shocked ninth-ranked Pittsburgh, 64-61, at Prudential Center.
Jeff Robinson had 15 points while Eugene Harvey and Jeremy Hazell each added nine points for the Pirates (12-6, 3-4 Big East), who have won three of their last four.
Ashton Gibbs had 23 points and Jermaine Dixon added 11 points and six rebounds for the Panthers (15-4, 5-2), who have dropped two straight on the heels of an eight-game winning streak.
Holding the lead, Seton Hall built it to 41-33 on a Pope three-point play with 15 1/2 minutes to play in the game.
Pitt cut the lead to three points, 50-47, on a Gilbert Brown tip-in with 8 1/2 minutes left, but Robinson hit two free throws, Hazell followed with a layup and Pope then slammed the ball home for a 56-47 lead with 6 1/2 minutes left in the game.
A bit later, Gibbs hit a jumper, Nasir Robinson followed with 1-of-2 from the line and a layup from Dixon cut Pitt's deficit to 58-54 with just over three minutes to play.
Gibbs made it a three-point game as his two free throws made it a 61-58 game with 37 seconds to play.
Pope made one-of-two at the other end, but Brown buried a long ball with 17 seconds to play to make it a one-point contest.
Jeff Robinson then connected on both his free throws with 12 seconds to play for a three-point lead.
Gibbs missed a three-pointer and got his own rebound, but missed the next three-pointer as time expired and Seton Hall held on for the upset.
Much of the first half was tight with neither side building a substantial lead, but eight straight points by the Pirates capped on a Pope jumper gave the team a 30-19 lead with under three minutes left.
The Panthers, though, got the last seven points of the opening 20 minutes and Brad Wanamaker's three-pointer cut the deficit to 30-26 at the break.
Seton Hall plays at South Florida on Thursday...Pitt hosts St. John’s on Thursday...Pitt still holds a 29-20 lead in the series and has won nine of the last 13 meetings.
