It’s almost time for the Winter Olympics, and that means for a lot of people, memories of Nancy Kerrigan’s bizarre, tragic attack in 1994 come to mind. (Video of Kerrigan’s reaction here). It was one of those story that transcended sports; instantly, the world was enraptured as Kerrigan’s attackers were brought to justice.
Nancy Kerrigan, Again At The Center Of A Senseless Tragedy
↵Today, she’s facing another setback. According to reports, Nancy Kerrigan’s brother, Mark, has been charged with assault after an altercation that left his father unresponsive, and later, dead. The Boston Globe provides chilling details:
↵↵“He [Mark Kerrigan] stated that he wanted to use the phone and his father would not let him,” according to a Stoneham police report filed in court. “He said that he struggled with his father and put his hands around his father neck and his father fell to the floor. He said that his father was faking it.”
↵↵According to police, Mark Kerrigan was visibly intoxicated upon the officers’ arrival, and he was belligerent when officers tried to question him. Ultimately, the officers used pepper spray to subdue the 45 year-old. Police are still determining whether the father’s death can be definitively connected to his son’s attack.
↵It’s a tragic story for a family that’s already suffered their fair share of profound, and public, adversity. So far, Nancy Kerrigan—who’s largely shunned the spotlight since her attack—remains silent, and the details remain sketchy. Absent answers, though, we at least offer condolences.
