John Wall Says What We Already Knew: He’ll Likely Bolt After One Season
↵
↵Such is life for Kentucky point guard John Wall, who seems to be the frontrunner for college basketball’s national player of the year. Kentucky will officially become No. 1 in the nation today. His Wildcats stand as the last unbeaten team in hoops, and thanks to a pretty mediocre season in the SEC, it isn’t inconceivable that UK could run the table and enter the postseason unbeaten. It’s about as close to a lock as humanly possible that Wall will be the No. 1 draft selection. Last week, John Calipari made his thoughts known on his point guard’s future on Dan Patrick’s radio show:↵↵⇥ “If he came to me and said he was the No. 1 pick in the draft, and he wanted to come back, we’d probably be wrestling around on the floor because there’s no reason other than me trying to win more games that he should come back,” Calipari said.↵↵Wall, speaking after Kentucky thrashed Arkansas this weekend, made it sound as if he’s not really interested in wrestling with Calipari:↵↵⇥ “I joke about coming back, and like you say, he tells me, no,” Wall said after UK’s 101-70 victory over Arkansas on Saturday.↵⇥↵⇥When a reporter noted that players must obey their coach, Wall smiled and said, “Yeah. I really have no choice.”↵⇥
↵↵Having Wall around is all fine and good, and some top picks -- most recently Greg Oden -- really struggle with the choice to begin their pro careers, even when the money is obviously there for the taking. But no one will begrudge Wall when, three seconds after his season ends, he announces he’s going to the NBA. College hoops fans should probably be happy they even got him for one season. Without the NBA’s age minimum, it’s hard to imagine him ever setting foot on campus to begin with.↵
