There are few arguments in sports more played out than the “clutch or lucky” argument, so I pass this nugget along with much trepidation.
Dallas Mavericks: Clutch, Or Insanely Lucky?
↵
NBATV’s Rick Kamla pointed out an unbelievable stat on his Twitter today. With last night’s one-point win over Milwaukee, the Dallas Mavericks just won their tenth straight one-point game, tying a 50-year old NBA record.
↵So … are the Mavericks lucky, insanely clutch, or both? Kamla says clutch, and there’s something to that. Dallas is among the league’s best at executing set plays out of timeouts, and in Dirk Nowitzki, they have one of the league’s best finishers.
↵On the other hand, you have to get lucky to keep winning very even games over and over again. If you assume a one-point game is essentially a coin flip, the odds of winning 10 straight of those is one in 1,024.
↵In the spirit of bridging the differences, let’s just say the answer is a bit of both and move on.
