Andre Dawson had great years with the Expos, Cubs, and to a lesser extent, the Boston Red Sox. But in the eyes of the Baseball Hall of Fame, the glory years happened in Montreal. That’s why he’ll be inducted into the Hall of Fame next July wearing a Montreal Expos hat, whether he likes it or not.
Despite Objections, Andre Dawson Will Enter Hall As A Montreal Expo
From the Associated Press:
The Hall announced its decision Wednesday. Dawson told WMVP-AM in Chicago he thought Hall officials would discuss the issue with him in detail before the decision was made.
He said he wanted a chance to tell them “what really catapulted me to Hall of Fame status and pretty much what my preference was but I think their decision had been made. It was a little gut-wrenching for me to hear that but it’s their decision.”
“I’m disappointed,” Dawson told the ESPN Radio affiliate. “I can proudly say that because Chicago was my preference.”
Now, Dawson admittedly doesn’t have the greatest credibility with this stuff. In 1992, as noted below, he said publicly that he wanted to enter the Hall of Fame wearing a Boston Red Sox hat. But still.
If a player gets to the Hall of Fame, he should at least get to choose which team he represents. That’s a premise so unbelievably fundamental, you’d think even Major League Baseball would get it right. And yet…
