Boise State’s blue turf is so last decade. We’re off that, and Eastern Washington is making sure we’re onto the next one. The FCS school is planning to install a red field, hopefully in time for the 2010 season if funding allows.
Eastern Washington Thinks Blue Is Boring, Wants Red Turf

↵↵“There is no doubt that one of Boise State’s claims to fame has been their blue turf and like it or dislike it, it has certainly brought them a tremendous amount of notoriety,” EWU athletic director Bill Chaves said. “In a similar vein we have a tremendous opportunity at Eastern to do the same by differentiating ourselves with the red turf while providing a superior playing surface.”
↵↵This is excellent news (Yahoo!‘s Matt Hinton has taken to calling it “Blood Field”). Hopefully it leads to other schools experimenting. Syracuse is an obvious candidate; they could call it “The Orange Slice” (endless sponsorship opportunities). UC Santa Cruz could install yellow turf (“Banana Field”). But the real winner would be JMU’s purple field (“Da Purp”).
