In the third quarter against the Giants, the Vikings found themselves up 34-0 and with the ball at New York’s 1 yard line. Rather than simply boot the field goal, the Vikings, who were still starting most of their starters including Brett Favre, went for the touchdown. They were successful. Is this an okay thing to do? Time for a point/counterpoint.
Vikings Go For 4th-And-Goal Up 34-0. What Would You Do?
↵POINT: Favre and the Vikings seem to have been motivated by statistics here, and there’s no rule saying they can’t. The Giants, who have already allowed themselves to get blown out four times this season, are playoff-ineligible and have nothing but pride to pay for. If they elect not to, that’s their prerogative. The fact remains that if the Giants allow themselves to get banged around the field over and over again, it’s on them.
↵Sportsmanship has its place in football -- no cheap shots, no cheating, etc. -- but “hurt feelings,” in my opinion, do not enter the equation.
↵COUNTERPOINT: Aww man! Come on! Gaw! Pfffft! Come onnnnn!
