John Henson: Still Getting the Hang of Losing Gracefully

Lost in some of the hysteria of last night’s BCS game was a decent night of college hoops. Pitt nipped UC 74-71 to start the Big East 3-0 (and 13-2 overall) and most importantly, College of Charleston landed probably the biggest upset this side of Le Moyne this season, dropping North Carolina 82-79 in overtime. Despite having a decided edge inside, North Carolina couldn’t overcome the difference behind the 3-point line. The Heels were just 1-of-6 from deep, while the Cougars hit 13-of-32 attempts, including this dagger to force OT from Andrew Goudelock. North Carolina’s highly touted frosh John Henson didn’t handle the loss so well.

This was the link to the tweet, which has been predictably deleted overnight.

It’s understandable that a stud athlete would have some trouble dealing with losing when they probably did nothing but win in high school. The defending champs have lost to Kentucky, Texas, Syracuse and now College of Charleston. The Charleston loss is shocking, but that stuff happens on the road.

But to say you made someone’s career relevant? That’s a lot of big talk from a guy who is averaging 3.6 points and 2.9 rebounds, even if he’s a McDonald’s All-American. (And for the record, I’ve never heard “bad” things about Henson as a person, so I suspect it was more a heat-of-the-moment remark.) But humility will get you a lot further in this world than being condescending in defeat. Based on the fact that he already zapped the remark, I’m guessing someone communicated that sentiment to him.
