Rafer Alston Bought Out By Nets; Cavaliers, Heat Interested

We're reaching the time of the NBA season where veteran players on struggling teams get bought out of their contracts so they can join a contender. Rafer Alston is apparently the first guy to have this happen to him this season.

Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the New Jersey Nets have agreed to buy out the final year of Alston's contract and allow him to become a free agent. Alston, who was slated to earn $5.25 million this season, is now available to help any contending team in need of a point guard.

According to Wojnarowski, the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers are the early favorites to land Alston, who started for the Orlando Magic as they advanced to the NBA Finals last season. My early money is on Miami. The Heat currently employ Mario Chalmers and Carlos Arroyo at point guard and could desperately use an upgrade. Alston's also played for Miami before in his career and he's familiar with the area.
