When Matt Cassel manned the Patriots for most of the 2008 season after Tom Brady’s injury, he put together a season that surprised most fans. It wasn’t Tom Brady-esque, but it was pretty good for a guy that hadn’t started a football game that mattered since high school.
Matt Cassel Should Only Get Better With Charlie Weis Calling The Shots
↵Then he was traded to the Chiefs and he was pretty bad.
↵But fortunately for the Chiefs, things could be looking up with Charlie Weis as his new offensive coordinator:
↵
↵Judging by Matt Cassel's number's last season, we should hopefully see a more efficient Cassel under Weis, according to these averages. Here are Cassel's numbers for last season:
↵↵
↵- 55% completion rate
↵- 493 pass attempts
↵- 2,924 passing yards
↵- 16 TDs, 16 INTs
↵- 69.9 QB rating
↵- 42 sacks
↵The good news about Cassel's '09 numbers? He can really only improve. Those numbers would have collectively represented the worst season by a QB under Weis' guidance, perhaps with the exception of the '99 season in New York.
↵
↵Who really knows how effective Weis will be back in the NFL, but with Cassel having another full year under his belt, and with a leader that knows the system, his star is only becoming brighter.
↵It’s OK, Chiefs fans. It might not be that bad after all.
