Mourinho Claims Real Madrid Won’t Sign Anyone This January

Spanish newspaper editors had their job made infinitely more difficult this afternoon, as Jose Mourinho announced that Real Madrid would not be signing anyone this January transfer window. With Madrid’s next signing a constant favourite on the front of dailies such as Marca and AS, they’ll just have to use their imagination during the next few months, or simply fast forward to the summer. But this is Real Madrid we’re talking about, so can we really believe the special one?

Mourinho let it known in no uncertain terms that he is more than happy with the squad he has at his disposal and whilst it’s not perfect, it will more than suffice as Real Madrid chase an unprecedented tenth Champions League trophy. Mou, as he’s affectionately known in Spain, stated ‘This is the squad we’ll have until the end of the season. These are the players in which we are placing our trust. Real Madrid has already invested heavily, not only last summer but during previous years also. It’s not a perfect squad, but the perfect squad doesn’t exist. What we have here is an optimum squad, with players who give me an enormous amount of confidence and unless something extremely unusual happens we will not be signing anyone in January’. A pretty conclusive statement, but with Florentino Perez around, that something unusual is never far away.

With Wayne Rooney, Fernando Llorente, Nilmar and Gareth Bale all having been linked with a move to the Bernabeu, their respective clubs can breathe a huge sigh of relief. They have their players until the summer at least. But with Madrid fans despairing at misfiring strikers Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema, perhaps Real Madrid will be left shortchanged upfront. An incredible thought when you think of the freescoring team of last season, mixed with the attacking talent brought in this summer. A lethal number 9 is what the fans want. But for now they’ll have to wait.
