It's always fun to get inside the head of an NFL talent evaluator. In this case, it's San Francisco 49ers legend Bill Walsh. Someone sent me a link earlier today on how he evaluates each position.
How Bill Walsh evaluated each position
The content is a little antiquated considering it came out in 1997, but much of it remains relevant today. On quarterbacks:
If throwing a ball were the only aspect of playing quarterback, then this would be an easy position to evaluate. However, because of the dynamic role he plays on the team, a quarterback must have physical, mental, emotional and instinctive traits that go well beyond the mere ability to pass a football.
On inside linebackers:
The inside linebacker has to be substantial enough to meet blockers coming from any number of angles and not be knocked around the field easily. Instinct is mandatory at this position. He must be able to watch the ball and read the blocking. It’s difficult to describe how to look for instinct, but the guys who find a way to get to the football and make the tackle, they probably have it.
