Chris Wondolowski has supplied almost all of the San Jose offense this season. So it should come as little surprise that he has provided all of it today as the Quakes have surged to a 3-0 lead over Chivas USA.
Major League Soccer, Final Week: Wondolowski Hat Trick Puts Earthquakes Up 3-0
Wondolowski got it started with a 48th minute penalty -- which he drew himself -- scored in the 60th minute and then completed his second hat trick of the season in the 73rd minute.
Wondolowski now has 17 goals, more than half of his team’s total. He is now tied with Edson Buddle for the MLS lead.
The Earthquakes currently reside in the final playoff position but can move up to as high as the fourth spot if they win their final two matches. A fourth-place finish would mean their best chance at renewing their rivalry with the Los Angeles Galaxy, who they are 1-0-1 against this season.
The Quakes have not beaten any of their other likely first-round opponents this season.
Justin Braun did end up playing for Chivas USA.
