Jim Courier Named U.S. Davis Cup Captain, Replacing Patrick McEnroe

The United States Davis Cup team has been in search for a new captain since 10-year captain Patrick McEnroe retired last month. On Wednesday, the U.S. named former world tennis No. 1 Jim Courier as the new leader of the team that has won 32 Davis Cup titles, more than any other country.

Courier retired from the ATP circuit in 2000 but was a former member of the U.S. Davis Cup team that won the Cup in 1992 and again in 1995.

The team won a single Cup under McEnroe’s guidance, in 2007, so it’s no surprise that Courier’s first task is to lead the team to a first round victory against Chile next March. “We’re certainly going to have a test down there, there’s no doubt about that, playing in South America, likely to be on clay,” Courier told reporters on Wednesday.
