Dana White confirmed to MMA Fighting that the UFC and WEC will be merging in January 2011. The merger will result in four UFC events being broadcast on Versus next year. The move will bring featherweights and bantamweights to the biggest stage in the sport and the addition of the weight classes will greatly strengthen the UFC’s cards and provide them with the ability to put on even more events in the coming years.

Here is the video of Dana talking to MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani about the move:
Several of the WEC's lightweights will probably find themselves without jobs as the 155 pound roster is not strong beyond the top few fighters such as Donald Cerrone, Jamie Varner and champion Benson Henderson. The real big moves will be bringing marketable stars like Jose Aldo, Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres into the UFC fold.
SB Nation will have much more on the events of the merger as details become available.
