The sky continues to fall for one of England's once proudest sons as Michael Owen yet again faces another spell with the physio after his most recent injury setback. A new hamstring injury will keep Owen off the United bench 'for a few weeks' as the ex-Liverpool and England striker looks to soon impress Sir Alex Ferguson in hopes his time with United will be extended.
Manchester United’s Michael Owen Out With Injury Setback, Again
Already in the last year of a two year deal with the Red Devils, Owen has also expressed his desire to stay and fight for his spot at United instead of journeying down the leagues or playing Premier League football with a weaker club. The 2001 European Footballer of the Year hasn't appeared for United since 2 October's 0-0 draw away to Sunderland, a match in which he was pulled off at halftime in.
Unfortunately for Owen, the injury setbacks have plagued the latter stages of his career in English football and have become all too familiar signs that Owen’s best playing days are well behind him. Having only started 11 of his 31 matches last campaign, Owen could now be considering an early retirement at only 30.
Still, for all of Owens injury worries, he’s a player that’s reinvented himself at least somewhat. Having lost the searing pace that allowed him to terrorize defenders in his teens and early twenties, Owen has figured out a way to still score goals. He grabbed two in United’s Carling Cup third round victory over Scunthorpe in September and also bagged a crucial late equalizer away to Bolton later that week.
If Owen can miraculously shed the minor injuries and knocks that have plagued his late twenties, he can still be a valuable asset to a club in need of a poaching striker at least for the next three or four years.
