NHL Suspends Mike Cammalleri One Game For Stick Swinging, Leg Chopping Incident

A few years ago, Chris Simon of the New York Islanders took a two-handed chop at the face of Rangers forward Ryan Hollweg, who went down to the ice immediately. He needed stitches to close a wound on his chin. Simon was suspended indefinitely and didn't play for the rest of the season.

On Saturday night, Mike Cammalleri swung his stick at the face of Islanders prospect Nino Niederreiter. He missed before attacking the back of Niederreiter’s leg with a slash that sent the youngster to the locker room. But what if he didn’t miss?

That’s the only difference between Simon’s infraction and Cammalleri’s this weekend, yet while Simon got the book thrown at him, Cammalleri learned on Monday that he’ll only miss one game.

Michael Cammalleri was suspended for one game by the NHL due to a slashing incident on Nino Niederreiter in a preseason game Saturday against the New York Islanders. Cammalleri received a five-minute major and game misconduct on the play, which occurred with 3:08 left in the second period.
Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Cammalleri will forfeit $32,258.06. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

A lot of people may argue that the fact that Cammalleri did miss is a big deal. It’s a big difference. But what about intent? Doesn’t that mean anything? It’s hard to argue that Cammalleri’s intent was any different than Simon’s, isn’t it?
