Former Brazil national team coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, fired last month by Atletico Mineiro, has been hired by defending Serie A champions Flamengo, it was announced today. A former Fla player, Luxemburgo - a five time winner of the Brasileirao - will start his third stint with Flamengo on Thursday when the holders host Avaí.

Flamengo currently sit 15th in league, one spot above the drop, having won only once in their last 13 matches. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last seven contests. Their 26 goals scored in 27 matches is tied for the worst goal scoring record in the 20 team league.

Luxemburgo is set to replace Silas, hired on August 29 but fired yesterday. Silas won only one out of ten and left Flamengo within four points of relegation.

Now the scarlet and black turn to Luxemburgo, who managed Flamengo briefly in 1995. Luxemburgo has also enjoyed stints with Palmeiras, Santos, Corinthians, Cruzeiro as well as Real Madrid. He is best known for taking over Brazil in the wake of the 1998 World Cup, guiding them to the 1999 Copa América.

The 58-year-old former defender played for Flamengo from 1971 to 1977 before stints with Internacional and Botafogo.

As a coach, Luxemburgo has won five Brazilian national titles, the last of which came in 2004 with Cruzeiro.
