Iowa Hawkeyes defensive coordinator Norm Parker's battle with diabetes has led to the amputation of his right foot, head coach Kirk Ferentz announced Wednesday. Ferentz revealed the procedure about two weeks after it actually took place.
Iowa Defensive Coordinator Norm Parker Had Foot Amputated; Plans To Return
Parker probably won’t return in time for a critical Big Ten showdown at Michigan in two weeks, but does plan to return eventually and most likely some time this year.
“I think he’s turned the corner mentally,” Ferentz said. “The best I’ve heard his voice was Sunday morning (after a win over Penn State). And he just looked fantastic Monday when I saw him.
“I won’t say we’ve turned the corner or are on a downhill slope, but I think we’re certainly in much better shape than we were a couple weeks ago.”
Iowa’s defense ranks first or second in the Big Ten in every major statistical category except passing yardage, where it falls all the way down to ... third. The rushing and scoring defenses are second nationally and the total defense ranks fourth in the NCAA.
