The Mexico Manager Saga Continues

We reported yesterday that rumors were circulating that Monterrey manager Victor Manuel Vucetich was in consideration for the Mexico job, and it turns out those rumors are true. Soccer reporter for ESPN Scott French wrote for ESPN Los Angeles that Vucetich has met with the big bosses at the federation, including director of national teams Nestor de la Torre and secretary general Decio de Maria.

It’s reported in the article that de Maria will be looking to announce the new Mexico manager on October 18th, but the club has released a statement, as reported by El Porvenir, that if Vucetich is selected to be the new Mexico manager, he will remain with the club until the end of the current tournament in December.

That same El Porvanir article names Cruz Azul manager Enrique Meza and Toluca manager Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre as the other candidates for the job. Interestingly enough, Chepo is the brother of national teams director Nestor de la Torre, a man who is a historically polarizing figure. According to the ESPN piece, Chepo is yet to speak with FMF officials about the job. No information is available yet about whether or not Enrique Meza has spoken to FMF officials.

Apparently, Meza has spoken to La Jornada, though. If you don’t read Spanish, Meza says in the article that he believes both de la Torre and Vucetich to be worthy candidates for the job and that the Mexican national side would be in good hands with either man at the helm. Meza managed the Mexico side for one game on an interim basis, coaching the team to a draw against Spain.

Current interim manager Efrain Flores is not believed to be in the running for the job.
