The Atlanta Hawks had a key decision to make with budding young center Al Horford before the season began. They had to decide whether to give him a contract extension now, or let him become a restricted free agent next summer. They have elected to do the former.
Report: Al Horford Signs Five-Year, $60 Million Contract Extension With Atlanta Hawks
Michael Cunningham of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution was the first to report that the Hawks have agreed to a five-year, $60 million extension with Horford. The deal will keep Horford in Atlanta through the 2015/16 season. The Hawks had until midnight tonight to agree to a contract, otherwise Horford would become a restricted free agent. It appears they got it done with several hours to spare.
There are some incentives in the contract that still need to be negotiated, which would likely push the overall value past $60 million. Still, as of right now, Horford received the exact same contract extension as Joakim Noah did with the Chicago Bulls. They are pretty comporable players, but Horford is probably slightly better. In that case, the Hawks may have gotten good value with this signing.
