UEFA's European Championships often get the bulk of the media attention among the world's confederation championship tournaments, but CONMEBOL's Copa America, which crowns the champion of South America, provides the best blend of entertaining soccer and quality teams each time around. The 2011 edition of Copa America, to be hosted by Argentina July 1-24, will take place after CONCACAF's Gold Cup and in a summer without Euros, leaving it the only major competition on the world soccer calendar and a must-watch for any soccer fan.
2011 Copa America Draw Results In Intriguing Groups
The 10 CONMEBOL countries will be joined by two guest teams, Mexico and Japan, to make up the 12-team tournament that Brazil will enter as the defending champions. The draw was set up to split up the 12 teams into three, four team groups with Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay seeded so they could not be in the same group. All of the teams will play each other team in their group and the first and second place teams in each group will advance to the quarterfinals, along with the two best third place teams.
Here is what the draw produced:
Group A: Argentina, Colombia, Japan, Bolivia
Group B: Brazil, Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela
Group C: Uruguay, Chile, Mexico, Peru
