Pacquiao Vs. Margarito Undercard: Amateur Legend Guillermo Rigondeaux Outpoints Ricardo Cordoba

In the second of three preliminary televised fights on the Pacquiao-Margarito pay-per-view, Cuban defect and amateur legend Guillermo Rigondeaux scored a dull split decision over Ricardo Cordoba, winning on scores of 117-109, 114-112 and 112-114. Bad Left Hook and SB Nation scored it 116-112 for Rigondeaux.

The fight featured a knockdown of both men, with a body shot putting Cordoba down in the fourth round, and Rigondeaux’s knees touching the canvas in the sixth. The knockdown of Rigondeaux is advertised as the first time the 30-year-old, two-time Olympic gold medalist has been down in his entire career, amateur or professional.

The win was greeted mildly by the Cowboys Stadium crowd, to say the least. Rigondeaux (7-0, 5 KO) continues moving up the super bantamweight chain with the win over Rigondeaux (37-3-2, 23 KO), a world-ranked former titlist at the weight (122 lbs.) who now serves as the best win on Rigondeaux’s pro ledger. But to put it simply, Rigondeaux simply does not have a style that is going to make him a professional star. He can be an elite pro, and he will win titles, but Rigondeaux is not the same animal as countryman Yuriorkis Gamboa, for instance.

Coming up next is a welterweight bout between Philadelphia’s Mike Jones and Jesus Soto Karass, and after that one, the main event between Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito.
