Pirates Hire Clint Hurdle As Manager

According to Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman, the Pittsburgh Pirates have hired Clint Hurdle as their new manager.

Hurdle replaces John Russell, who was fired in October after leading the Pirates to a 186-299 record in three years as manager.

Hurdle spent seven full years as manager of the Colorado Rockies from 2002 to 2008, and was fired in May 2009 after the Rockies got off to a 18-28 start. He also led the franchise to its only World Series appearance, in 2007. The Rockies were swept by the Boston Red Sox.

Hurdle served as the Texas Rangers' hitting coach this season, which likely delayed the Pirates' managerial search. The Rangers making the World Series meant Hurdle could not be interviewed until the series was over, but recent news had the Pirates and Hurdle negotiating a contract this week.
