n'The United States' annual January match at the Home Depot Center, nicknamed "Camp Cupcake" because it only includes players in MLS and Scandinavian Leagues and leaves the US without anything resembling its best team, will be played against Chile this year on January 22. The match will kick off at 9 pm EST from Carson, California and will culminate a training camp for the United States at the Home Depot Center.
USMNT To Play Chile In January Friendly
Chile is a better team that the US is used to playing in the January friendly, but like their common January opponents, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Chile's national league is out of season in January so all of their domestic players will be free to play. Chile is coming off of an impressive World Cup performance in South Africa which saw them advance from their group to the Round of 16 where they were knocked out by Brazil. Under head coach Marcelo Bielsa, the Chileans have played a high-paced, attacking style that has endeared them to many neutral fans.
While the January training camp and friendly often leaves US fans feel short changed, there may be more anticipation for this one due to the exciting young players who will be available for the match. A decent chunk of the roster for the friendly versus South Africa, including Juan Agudelo, Mikkel Diskerud, Alejandro Bedoya and some guys not on the roster like Omar Gonzalez and Brek Shea, will get a chance in January.
Television information will be announced at a later date.
