On Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers made the decision to cut kicker Jeff Reed, who has spent his entire nine-year career with the team. From Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer:
Jeff Reed Cut By Steelers, Ending Kicker’s Nine-Year Career In Pittsburgh
Steelers are cutting jeff reed and signing shaun suisham. Reed has already been told
Reed, age 31, is 13th on the all-time kicker accuracy list, having made over 81% of his career field goals. He was also the kicker of record in the Steelers' two Super Bowl appearances, having kicked two field goals during their 27-23 win over the Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII.
However, Reed hasn't been as effective in 2010, having made only 68.2% of his field goal attempts. The last straw may have come on Sunday night, when Reed missed a chip-shot field goal against the Patriots. As the 68.2% team mark is the worst in the league, it's unclear how much interest Reed will gather, although some general manager may see value in a playoff-tested kicker who posted a 92% mark only three years ago.
