Danny Woodhead, Patriots Agree To Contract Extension Through 2012

The New England Patriots made a very smart move on Sept. 18 of this year when they signed RB Danny Woodhead, who was waived by the New York Jets just four days earlier. The signing came one day before the Patriots were facing the Jets making some think the Woodhead signing was done just to gather intel on the Jets' offense.

That’s not the case as Woodhead stepped into the New England offense and immediately made an impact. The Patriots now have awarded him with a contract extension that will keep him in New England through the 2012 season.

Woodhead’s deal will give him a $425,000 signing bonus, according to Ian Rapoport of the Boston Herald, along with a $395,000 base salary in 2010. He’ll receive $550,000 in 2011 and $700,000 in 2012 with potential incentives worth over $1.1 million.

Woodhead has carried the ball 56 times for 312 yards and three touchdowns for the Patriots. He’s been one of the biggest surprises this year for the 8-2 Patriots. Woodhead working out in New England is especially nice for the Patriots since he came from their AFC East rival, the Jets.

Woodhead and the Jets actually reached the deal on Nov. 19 -- just in time for next Monday’s game against his former team.
