It may be a holiday weekend in the United States, but the Vancouver Whitecaps aren't letting that get in the way of their roster-building intentions.
MLS Expansion: Vancouver Whitecaps Sign Three Of Their Former NASL Players
The latest move from one of MLS’s two newest franchises was to sign three players — all with ties to Whitecaps’ Division 2 days — bringing the total number of players under contract to 10.
Goalkeeper Jay Nolly, defender/midfielder Wes Knight and defender/midfielder Philippe Davies all played for Vancouver’s USSF D-2 team last year. Davies was officially signed as the team’s first Homegrown player. Other former D2 Whitecaps Terry Dunfield and Davide Chiumiento are widely believed to be signed relatively soon.
Nolly is the only one of the group who has MLS experience. Nolly spent three seasons as a backup with Real Salt Lake and DC United before spending the last three seasons in Vancouver as their starting goalkeeper. Last year was probably his most impressive as he posted a .74 goals against average and registered 14 shutouts in 30 matches. He has 41 shutouts in his Whitecaps career.
Knight how shown a penchant for joining the attack as a right back, registering 10 assists in his two seasons.
Davies, 19, has made 28 starts in two seasons since moving over from the Whitecaps’ Residency program.
