Report: Bill Stewart To Retire As West Virginia Coach

According to a report from EerSports, the 247Sports West Virginia affiliate, West Virginia head coach Bill Stewart plans to retire after the Moutaineers’ season concludes.

HailWV.com summarized the report, which included speculation about possible replacements for Stewart.

According to sources, West Virginia natives Rick Trickett - a former top assistant at WVU now serving as Florida State’s assistant head coach - Terry Bowden and Tommy Bowden are among the top preliminary choices to replace Stewart.

Word of Stewart’s possible retirement follows the Mountaineers dominating win over Pitt in the Backyard Brawl on Saturday. West Virginia currently sits atop the Big East standings, in line for a BCS bowl berth. The Mountaineers conclude the regular season on Dec. 4 at home against Rutgers.

Stewart took the reigns at West Virginia following after former head coach Rich Rodriguez left for Michigan following the 2007 regular season. It was Stewart's upset win over No. 3 Oklahoma that endeared him to players and fans, earning him the promotion to head coach. Previously, he had worked as an assistant, coaching quarterbacks since 2000. As a head coach, Stewart has compiled a 27-11 record, including a 14-6 record in the Big East.

We’ll have more on the situation as it continues to develop.
