Two Sunday matches finish the English Premier League’s 15th matchday. The day starts at 8:30 a.m. Eastern when Chelsea, losers of three of the last four, go to Newcastle to take on a Magpies side licking its wounds after last weekend’s 5-1 loss at Bolton. After that we get the weekend fixture featuring that biggest pairing of names: Liverpool’s visit to Tottenham Hotspur.
English Premier League Sunday: Chelsea Tries To Recapture League Lead
For Chelsea, injuries and suspensions have taken their toll on standing as well as form. Coming into Sunday’s match, they’re trailing Manchester United and Arsenal, and while a win will vault them back to the top of the table, their temporary position as chasers underscores the extent to which the Frank Lampard and Michael Essien absences have been felt. How temporary the position is depends on Newcastle, who were demolished last weekend but already have one win over Chelsea this fall: a 4-3, League Cup win at Stamford Bridge.
Then, at 11:00 a.m. Eastern, Spurs welcome Liverpool to White Hart Lane, and while Tottenham’s win over Arsenal (as well as exploits in Champions League) give the impression of a club ready to challenge the top of the table, only three points separate them from the limping Liverpool. And yes, Liverpool is limping still. A home victory over the league’s bottom feeder doesn’t change that. Whereas Liverpool has four points from recent matches with Wigan, Stoke, and West Ham (who they defeated last weekend, 3-0), Spurs have seven from Sunderland, Blackburn and Arsenal.
And as always, SB Nation Soccer will have live update of both matches. While the action won’t come as quickly as yesterday, when there were six seven matchs going-on simultaneously, there’s guaranteed to be news from the day’s matches. After all, even a 0-0 at St. James’ Park means the league’s lead has changed hands.
